The hand-pulled rickshaw is probably the oldest form of taxi service known to man. In many Asian countries it's now been replaced by the bicycle rickshaw and the motorised pedicab. Even in Kolkata it's use has been curtailed. But for thousands of poor peasants like SANTALAL, THE RICKSHAW WALLAH, pulling a rickshaw by hand still offers a way out of the rural poverty and despair.
