Torture and Human Rights in Tunisia

The Tunisian government said it was defending democracy against its enemies - the Islamists. En-Nahda countered that the regime used this argument to justify systematic torture and abuse of human rights. Amnesty International and NPR's inquiries revealed that there was abuse - often widespread, and Tunisia is still regularly cited by the US State Department for its violations of human rights.
