Is Britain the Future of Islam?
The clash between generations, and between Muslims and the rest of British society, inevitably redefines what it means to be a Muslim in Britain. Would the importance of the mosque be supplanted by other institutions, such as the radio phone-in on Radio Sunrise? Where subjects until then taboo (incest) could be discussed anonymously. Young Muslim professional women found that for all its racism, British society offered them avenues to both realize their careers as young women, while maintaining their full commitment to Islam. The freedoms of a liberal Western democracy could be the catalyst of a new dynamic modern Islam, maybe peculiar to Britain, but with lessons for both Muslim and non-Muslim societies worldwide. Modernity and Faith could be compatible.
