The HUGLI

Hugli is another name for Bhagirathi. Bhagirathi is an old distributary of Ganga that dried up a few hundred years ago. Since 1975 it has been re-activated by the feeder canal from Farakka, and it changes its name to Hugli at Krishnanagar because this marks the northernmost limit of tidal waters up the river and through Kolkata. So fresh water Bhagirathi, salt water Hugli.
