HOW A UASB WORKS

UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) makes use of anaerobic bacteria to decompose the waste material, and requires some amounts of post-treatment. It quickly became all the rage because it’s cheap to operate but it’s not quite as effective at reducing BOD levels as the traditional method. This plant was also slated to receive effluent from the tanneries. The idea was that the chromium and other heavy metals from this wastewater would be removed (“recovered” in technical jargon) and recycled at the tanneries before being sent to the treatment plant.
